CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN PHARMACY

It is an incredibly exciting time to pursue a career in pharmacy and students graduating have a wide-range of career opportunities available to them. 

Retail Pharmacy

The majority of pharmacists work in retail pharmacy.  Retail pharmacists dispense and verify medications, counsel patients on medication use and general health topics, and recommend over-the-counter products. Additionally, depending on the pharmacy, retail pharmacists may vaccinate patients or offer medication therapy management to patients with chronic disorders (e.g., diabetes) or both.  Retail pharmacists manage pharmacy technicians and may choose to pursue a management track.   

Independent Pharmacy

In addition to the responsibilities described under retail pharmacy, pharmacists working at an independent pharmacy may compound medications and, depending on the size of the pharmacy they own, they may manage finances, order and take inventory of items sold at the pharmacy, manage personnel, make payroll, etc

Hospital Pharmacy

Hospital pharmacists advise health care providers and patients on the safe and effective use of medications and are responsible for choosing, preparing, storing, compounding, and dispensing medications. Other responsibilities include monitoring medication use, implementing hospital regulations related to medication, and other administrative tasks.

Clinical Pharmacy

Clinical pharmacists work with physicians and other health care professionals to ensure that medications contribute to optimal patient health outcomes. Responsibilities may include evaluating patient response to prescribed medications, attending patient rounds in hospital units, and counseling patients. Clinical pharmacists work in hospitals, health clinics, nursing homes, and insurance companies.

Managed Care

Managed care pharmacists work directly with other health care professionals to provide medication therapy management, while considering the pharmacoeconomic impact on patients. They provide a broad range of clinical services including monitoring patient safety and outcomes, managing formularies, and patient education. Managed care pharmacists typically work for health plans and pharmacy benefit management companies.

Industry

There are a broad range of opportunities available to pharmacists in the pharmaceutical industry.  They can participate in research and development, quality assurance, drug information, sales, marketing, regulatory affairs or clinical trials..

Consultant Pharmacy

Pharmacy consultants typically work with long-term care facilities and review drug regimens, offer pharmacokinetic dosing services, patient counseling, and therapeutic drug monitoring. Long-term care facilitates include nursing homes, mental institutions, home health agencies, hospice care, correctional institutions, rehabilitation centers, and adult day care centers.

Academia

Pharmacists interested in training the next generation can pursue a career as faculty member at a college or school of pharmacy. Pharmacy faculty teach, conduct research, participate in public service, precept students, and contribute to patient care. Individuals interested in a career in academia should study their Masters in Pharmacy or Pharm D.

Government Agencies

Pharmacists can get employed as Drug Inspectors in State as wells as Central Government, Analysts in Drug Laboratories, Scientists in Drug Research Laboratories and CSIR Institutes.

Training and Guidance

Besides the knowledge in academic subjects overall development of a student is an essential thing in moulding the student to an employable person. The job opportunities is diversified now. The graduates can start their career as a clinical or community pharmacist or they can get exposed to sopsticated jobs like clinical data management as medical writers. Another promising field is getting employed in production, research, quality analysis , quality assurance etc. Another option of students is to get enrolled in post graduate specialisations like M.Pharm, MBA, Post Baccueaularete Pharm D, PG Diploma in Clinical Trials.

Training and Placement Cell is offering mentoring services to students to focus on their interests. They are given proper guidance and information of career aspects like Production Executive,Quality Analyst, Research and Development, Marketing, Pre Clinical Trials, Clinical Trials, Remote Pharmacist, Medical Writing, Medical Transcription etc. Students are given opportunity for interaction with Qualified Faculty from Industries and Research Organisations to mould themselves with the desired job. For the purpose of identifying their interests we have collected data from among students and have introduced a Placement book. According to the preferences in the data on-campus/outside placements are scheduled. For attaining the goals, students are given training programs which ensure the development of Personality and Communication Skills.

Students interested in pursuing higher studies are given training session and mock tests for National level Pharmacy aptitude test like Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test-GPAT. Students are also exposed to Online GPAT mock tests conducted by national organisations. Our eight students got qualified in GPAT.

Our institute organises seminars by Eminent Academicians from Foreign Universities for the students to acquainted about their possibilities for higher studies abroad. Students are also allowed to participate in International  Educational Exhibitions to familiarize the procedures for filing towards immigration to the foreign countries for higher studies.

Our institute organises various programs like Pharmacy Quiz, Debate, Presentations regarding health related themes and drugs are given by students on specific days on which they are relevant like World Heart Day. Our College organises program on dates of National Relevance which are co-ordinated by students. Programs of this sort will definitely develop their presentation skills which will be an attribute in their career.
